ADUs & additions

Considering an ADU? Start with the property.

Gather the information your project team needs before treating a concept as a construction-ready plan.

Describe what you want to build

Write down intended use, approximate size, and whether the space is detached or connected to the main home. Include access needs and existing buildings. Photos and available property documents help explain the idea.

Confirm local feasibility

Ask the appropriate local professionals and jurisdiction to review zoning, setbacks, utilities, access, and other applicable requirements. An ADU concept that works on one parcel may not work on another.

Bring the right professionals together

Survey, architecture, engineering, and licensed construction services may be needed depending on the property and scope. Confirm each professional's role before relying on a preliminary sketch or price.

Build the next-step list

Document the remaining information, who will obtain it, and what decisions it affects. BCG provides development management and project coordination; permit-specific services can be coordinated through The Permit Expert.

General guidance, not a property-specific assessment. Confirm technical and jurisdiction-specific requirements with the appropriate licensed professionals.
